Much of the housing in Bulgaria is overcrowded and the reason for this is the poor accessibility of the homes.

According to the data, 52.8% of young Bulgarians aged between 25 and 34 live with their parents, and this is the second place in the EU after Slovakia.

The problems with the poor accessibility of housing in Bulgaria are accompanied by at least three more problems. First, the lack of alternative models for access to housing - for example, construction of non-market housing. Second, a small number of social housing, the rate of which remains symbolic. And thirdly, the lack of credit-saving mechanisms to provide access to housing.

Overcrowding leads to imbalances in a number of regions of the country, worsened demographics and a large uninhabited housing stock, as well as the "ghettoisation" of entire neighborhoods, coupled with illegal housing construction.

When it comes to sustainable development, we must recall that the challenges of urban development have been seen in a fragmented way. It is necessary to consider the issues in their entirety. In the future, integrated solutions need to be sought instead of sectoral solutions.

The definition of sustainable development of a municipality is to have a good, clean and green environment, low crime, a strong economy, equal access to quality public services and equal opportunities for lifelong development.

Cities attract more working-age population, generate more gross domestic product and have higher employment growth. This leads to major social challenges, such as the need to build more housing, better transport infrastructure and more integration measures for vulnerable groups.
