Using the existing building stock and the potential new housing in still undeveloped areas, another million people could live in Sofia. The last census in the capital account for 1,325 million inhabitants, and the city's housing capacity is about 2.45 million people.
The largest opportunities for taking more people have neighborhoods within the city limits, namely "Malinova Dolina - Zapad" (nearly 35 000 people), "Manastirski Livadi - Iztok" (26 700 people) and "Gorublyane" (20 400 people), each of which is estimated at 30 sq.m. per inhabitant.
The final results show that at 30 sq.m. per inhabitant the territory of Sofia Municipality can take up to 2.5 million inhabitants, of which nearly 1 million new. Whether this will ever become a reality depends not so much on what the overall urban development plan is about, but on demographic and economic trends at local, national, and even international levels.
