44% of Bulgarians live in overcrowded housing, according to Eurostat. This means that they do not have enough rooms for their household size.

By this indicator, our country ranks second in the EU after Romania, where the same is true for 47% of locals. The number of households overcrowded is also high in Latvia (42%) and Croatia (41%), with the lowest in Cyprus (2%) and Ireland (1%).

At the same time, 60 percent of non-EU foreign nationals live in overcrowded housing. This is also the highest level among EU Member States. Croatia is followed by 59%, Greece by 55% and Italy by 54%. The lowest levels were reported in Malta (8%) and Cyprus (5%).

Most foreigners who come from another EU country live closely in Greece and Italy (45% each). At the same time in Malta, no foreigner coming from the other side of the union lived in overcrowded households.

In total for the European Union, 35% of non-EU foreigners lived in overcrowded homes. 17% of locals also lived in narrow housing, as did 20% of foreigners coming from another EU country.

At the same time, Bulgaria is among the countries with the highest residential property in the EU. 83.5% of Bulgarians lived in their own homes, Eurostat data show. Romania ranks first in the EU with 95.9% of locals living in their own homes. Slovakia followed with 91.2% and Croatia with 90.2%.

At the other pole is Germany, the only EU member state where less than half (49.1%) of the locals lived in their own home. It is followed by Denmark with 57.6%, Austria with 62.1% and France with 63.8%.

However, for a considerable part of the Bulgarians, housing costs are an extra burden, Eurostat statistics show. 14.9% of our countrymen tell us that their home absorbs more than 40% of their disposable income. By this indicator, our country ranks third in the EU after Greece, where 37.9% of locals claim that housing costs are an undue burden for them, and Denmark, where 16.2% of locals are in the same opinion.

After Bulgaria are Germany with 13.9% and the Netherlands with 10%.
